Can Lemon Balm help women who have an unsatisfying sex life?

New research from a Tehran's Medical University shows women experienced greater sexual satisfaction and intimacy with their partners while supplementing with Lemon Balm.

Sexual dysfunctions are more common in our society than we may think. Recent demographic data suggest that they affect between 25% and 65% of women, and around 31% of men

Equally spread between men and women is the great variety of ways in which the disfunction manifests, as well as the medical and psychological causes that are in play. In addition to this widespread prevalence, and the variety of factors involved, sexual dysfunctions have been found to have a significant impact on relationships and on the overall quality of life in both men and women.

One report among many may be taken as a sign that this field is becoming illuminated by research. It comes from Teheran's medical and University arena and concerns 89 women selected from representative age groups who were exhibiting decreased sexual desire. They were divided into two groups, with one group taking four 500mg capsules of Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) aqueous extract per day for four weeks. The other group was given a placebo.

Here is what the results of the trial showed

At the end of the trial period, changes in female sexual function were evaluated from the women's responses to the Female Sexual Function Index questionnaire. This internationally recognised structure assesses a range of factors (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction and pain) each along a 5 point scale. The questionnaire enables standardised quantification in a field rich in very subtle differences of individual reaction, and of subjective feelings and judgements.

The evaluation of the results from the women in Teheran showed that the Melissa officinalis group experienced a significantly improved outcome across all vectors in the study while the placebo group recorded no measurable improvements in any of them. This result was confirmed by the readiness of a majority of the women in the Melissa group to continue the treatment after the completion of the trial.

So how does Lemon Balm help here?

Well, this is where the centuries of use of Melissa officinalis come into their own. This herb we know as Lemon Balm has a well-known and well-loved capability to relax the mind and loosen the stranglehold of anxiety, stress and fear which can so fatally inhibit many aspects of our lives.

Not a Silver Bullet

Melissa is not a quick fix. It is not a “viagra” boost for a wild weekend. Choose rather to introduce it as part of your normal healthful routine and let it earn its keep, working its way gradually towards giving a better life for you (and your partner). Don't forget that the Iranian women were taking four 500mg capsules per day over a period of four weeks. This was for a trial with limited time at its disposal, and it included an ongoing suggestion to follow over time. London Herbs Organic Lemon Balm Extract comes in a 6:1 concentration of 3000mg herb leaf in each 500mg capsule.
